  • Original Owner: John Fay, saloon owner at 2723 Elm

Stepping onto the spacious wrap-around porch, visitors immediately feel invited into this definitive Classical Revival gem. Notably generous windows and the broad, leaded-glass front door create a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors. Built in 1911 for a saloon owner who aspired to gain a foothold in genteel society, the house still retains many of its original fixtures, including a couple of huge pocket doors and a staff-friendly swinging door into the kitchen.

The oak floors in the “public” areas of the house give way to pine in the rooms intended for family or staff use. As you explore, consider identifying the 21st-century accommodations and speculating about the original purpose of certain spaces within this 112-year-old home. Over time, sleeping porches were enclosed, and the first floor’s single bathroom was added much later in the 1900s.

Unlike many grand Munger Place homes that were partitioned or subdivided during the Great Depression and subsequent decades, this house remained intact. However, several rooms were rented out over time. The striking staircase immediately captures attention upon entering the house, but don’t miss the handsome, hand-carved carousel pony in the foyer. Interestingly, this and other pieces in the house were meticulously carved by the father of one of the owners.

The stained-glass window at the landing suffered damage during a 2012 hailstorm, but it has since been restored to its former splendor. Since the house was originally built for a saloon owner, if you happen to encounter the current resident, perhaps you can convince them to serve you one of their signature limoncellos.
